What is Facebook Metaverse?

You may have recently noticed that Facebook has changed its name to “Meta.” This move is all part of the company’s ambitions to build the “Facebook Metaverse.” Mark Zuckerberg unveiled the new platform this month with a keynote speech where he described the metaverse as the next evolution of social connection.

What is Meta?

Meta is a term that describes something self-aware. The term “metaverse” refers to a virtual, 3D experience that exists in its own digital universe. Zuckerberg believes the metaverse will be the successor to the mobile internet. In other words, it will exist entirely as a virtual reality that users can explore, connect, create, and even work within.

Although this move may come as a shock to some, Facebook has been involved in virtual reality for some time now. Approximately 700 million people monthly are already using Facebook’s augmented reality tools across its family of apps.

How Will it Work?

According to Zuckerberg, the most important element of the metaverse is the “feeling of presence,” creating a sense of connection that many people feel they have lost over the past couple of years of the pandemic.

The metaverse will bring the internet to life through a 3D virtual environment where you can go inside of something instead of looking at it on the screen. Essentially, it is a world of endless, interconnected virtual communities where people can meet, play, and work. Users will need reality headsets, augmented reality glasses, smartphones, and other devices to enter the metaverse.

The Impact of the Metaverse

How the Facebook Metaverse will impact people or businesses is still unknown, but this new way of interacting online isn’t far away. Zuckerberg has a team of experts working on the platform and predicts it will be fully integrated in 5 to 10 years.
